My Process

When I first started working on this project I think the thing I was most excited about was creating a character. I found out a lot of things about the kind of character I made after trying to animate her. I found out that it is hard to convey certain emotions with a character without eyes, somehow she can see through her hair, all of the emotion is conveyed through her mouth and her actions. I was kind of fun to be limited like this and I think it has taught me a lot. After I created a character I made up a simple story she could be part of, a story that hopefully anyone could understand after seeing once. I think fruit falling from a tree can lead to a very simple story and that is why I chose to do this story. After the story I thought of the most simplistic method in which I could finish this. I thought of limited animation that is used in a lot of cartoons. I thought of anime and current flash animations like powerpuff girls and Johnny Test.

Weekend Update

This weekend I focused a lot of my attention on finishing my senior project. I finished shooting it and now all I have to do is a little bit of editing because I also started editing. I did not get to work on my Flash Final as much as I wanted but this weekend but I will be devoting all of my time this week and weekend to it.

Today

Today I plan to start animating my film even though I have a few puppets and backgrounds that I still want to work on. My animation is minimal so there wont be a lot to do but i figure I should get started soon. I hope to finish the whole thing by the end of this weekend, but that is just a goal for now.

this weekend

I worked on some backgrounds and some more flash puppets. I went to the job fair and saw a few companies. they seemed pretty interested in the things i designed for flash.

How it's going

This weekend was pretty hectic as far as my senior project was concerned. I shot my film for most of the weekend and it took a big chunk of my days. I was also able to see Laika's Coraline and I liked it a lot, but also found it to be a bit creepy. As far as flash work I still have a few simple puppets to finish and so I'll be working on that a little more today.

This Weekend

This weekend I completed a puppet for my final animation in this class. I was also working really hard to get my set ready to shoot for my stop motion senior project. I really wanted to see the Coraline movie but I did not get to.

Second rotoscope

This is from a video that I made last year with my roommate Tim Fisher who has graduated

Walk Cycle

This is my walk cycle, I think it turned out alright. She walks in a rather goofy manner though, I think it's the big feet and be cause there is no separate heel and toe.

Work to be finished

The only things I have to finish are the second rotoscope and the walk cycle with my character. I think I will be able to finish.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Lip Sync

This is my lip syn animation, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out

Second Jump

I don't know why this movie isn't exactly like the flash file but this is it. I think the jump looks okay.

These Past Few Days

These past few days I've been working on my lip sync, my storyboards, and my script. I have also been trying to finish my second jump but it's been giving me some problems. During the jump my character breaks into different parts for some reason. This weekend I was also working really hard to finish my puppets and set for my senior project. I have alot more work this quarter then I expected.

Rotoscoping Project

This is my rotoscoping project done with the Muybridge footage. I think this was a very helpful project because it gives me more possibilities as to what I can do with flash in the future.

Updated Character Design

I resized everything and traced it on a light table because I usually like to draw large and I don't have an 18x24 scanner. This is Gloomy Girl, my character for my final animation.

My weekend and character for final project

This weekend I bought a light table to help make my character designs look a little more organized. I finished making my final project character into vectors in photoshop and now she is ready for the second jump ( at least from the side view). I'm going to post the first sketches of my character in this post since I haven't done that yet but I will be posting an updated version very soon.

How the work is going

Right now I'm working on my character that I'm going to be using for my final film and that I will be using for my second jump. I am using the pen too to draw over my character designs in photoshop.

Jumping Clown

This is the jumping exercise done with the clown puppet

What I worked on over the weekend

I created a character for my final animation over the weekend. I drew her from a side view first and then I drew her from the front. After drawing the two views I drew a few facial expressions for her. I came up with a story to put her in while working on her character design. So I started on my storyboards also. Next I am going to prepare my character to be put in flash.

Bouncing Ball

This is the first bouncing ball I completed just using the ease slider

This is the Bouncing ball I did using the editor. I found this method to be much harder than just using the ease slider.

The Premise For My Animation

A gloomy looking girl is walking in the woods and decides to sit down on a tree stump in front of an apple tree. While sitting at the tree stump the girl notices an apple on the ground in front of her. After closer inspection she sees that the apple is rotten, she looks at it in disgust. As she looks a the rotten apple a beautiful and almost perfect looking apple falls from the tree where the rotten apple had most likely fallen from. The girl stands up from the stump and picks up this perfect looking apple. The apple is shiny and looks perfect for eating. The girls holds the apple up to her face and is about to take a bite when the apple opens its eyes and mouth and smiles at the girl. The girl quickly drops the smiling apple and steps on it, leaving it next to the rotting apple she first saw when she sat down.

Illustrators I like

John Cebollero is one of my favorite illustrators I like the way he distorts his figures and the emotion that is so well displayed by the characters he creates. http://www.johncebollero.com I think that he shows alot of skill in the work that he dose by using digital and traditional media .

Inspirational Animation: The PowerPuff Girls

I chose the Power Puff girls because because I like the art style and how it utilizes flash. I really like how the back grounds are done in a way that uses simplified detail and distorted shapes. I also like the use of limited animation.

Introduction

My Name is Brandon Milteer and I'm a senior animation major at SCAD. I'm from Louisville Kentucky, which is home to the Kentucky Derby. I am currently completing my senior project that is being done using stop motion animation. I decided to take Digital Cel I because I thought it would be important to learn how to use flash because it seems to be a widely used software in the animation industry. Even though the school is trying to transition over to Digital Pro I would still like to learn Flash as well. I also enjoyed creating cut out animation in Motion Studies class freshmen year and I think that this would really be a great opertunity to go a few steps ahead of that.
